Laura Marino Rugeles’ Abstract
Here is Laura Marino Rugeles’ (VIU) abstract for “Libertarianism without Luck”:
In this essay I will critically examine M. Almeida and M. Bernstein’s answer to Robert Kane’s solution to the “luck principle” (LP) challenge to libertarianism. In “Responsibility, Luck and Chance,” Kane questions the connection between indeterminism and luck. Kane’s position is that indeterminism does not preclude control and responsibility. In “Lucky Libertarianism,” Almeida and Bernstein argue that Kane is able to minimize the degree to which indeterminism subverts control only because he relies on favourable probabilities. I will argue that indeterminism and control are compatible despite the agent’s actions having high or low probabilities. Hence, Kane does not need to rely on the likelihood of the outcome.
